The Island at the Center of the World

This title provides an account of the Dutch period in America, when the Netherlands claimed a territory which would cover land in modern day New York State, Connecticut and New Jersey.  New research on this colony that began in the 1970's is incorporated into the book.  Below is a link if you wish to buy it.

Today I went to Madison Square Park and took some pictures of some elm trees that predate the park.

Welcome to ptrtd.com, my personal blog about historical landscapes and landmarks in New York City and beyond.  My first name is Peter, my middle initial is T, and the first letter of my last name is D, so if you take the consonants in my first name (ptr), and then add the two letters that I previously mentioned (t and d), you get 'ptrtd'.  This is how I came up with the name for the site.

On this site, you will find photo galleries, timelines, maps, and books about New York.   I have divided the photo galleries by Ward boundaries as they were in 1864.  I did this somewhat arbitrarily, but somewhat to give you an idea of where things used to be.  So, for instance, if you are curious about the Sixth Ward, and want to see what I have, you can simply click on the 'Sixth Ward' link and zoom in as you see fit.  A disadvantage of this is that the Twelfth Ward is defined as all of Manhattan including and above 86th Street.  I personally don't mind, so I'm not going to change it :--).

There is a 'Facebook on ptrtd.com' section (currently in Beta) of this site that allows you to use your Facebook account here.  Also in beta, and available off of the main menu, is a 'ptrtd on Facebook' app.

There is also a registered part of the site, which gives access to more content, and enables you to use my online store.  I am currently selling several digital photo galleries, all of them currently for free.

I am an I.T. consultant, and my company website is www.peterdavisconsulting.com.  I have an M.S. in Computer Science from Columbia University, and several years of experience at big banks.  In addition, I have a history degree from Haverford College, a small college in Pennsylvania, which, as it turns out, is better than Swarthmore College.

In the summer of 1995, I worked as an intern at a photographic archive run by the Society of Friends.  That summer, I took pictures of the Meeting House directly across the street from where I worked (15th St).  I also took 2 photos of what used to be 20th Street Meeting House.
